Methods

  1. Get a set of jars to put away
  2. Lookup each species in the lookup tab of the google sheet for the entire cart. That way you can focus on organizing the specimens afterwards
  3. Correct any misspellings that shows up in the Lookup didn’t find column
  4. Check the “Need to annotate jar” column to see if you need to annotate any of the jars. Annotate any jars by crossing out the species name on the external label and writing the new name neatly with the uniball specimens
  5. Use the planning tabs using the appropriate grouping (Salamanders, Snakes etc.) in the “Planning Herpetology” sheet to put away the jars. You can also use the “Data from Arctos” tab to help you organize the specimens. Make sure you only organize by the ‘Corrected taxon”
    1. The herp collections are organized in alphabetical order by Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species, Country, State, County. Each species should get its own column on the shelf. To help you space out the species appropriately, look at the right most columns, which will give you a suggested shelf to place the jar (Shelf instructions) and Cabinet. These two columns are highlighted in yellow. Do note that county organization is somewhat difficult as they are often mixed together. Do your best and go by the first county listed on the jar.
    2. For species with a lot of jars, organize front to back and to the right
    3. Add sticky notes with the beginning of the genus to help you find the genus later again.
  6. If your family that you’re working in is especially large, you may want to get a more detailed plan that shows everything by species or genus. Duplicate a family tab and select from the dropdown menu the Class, and Family. Make sure to copy the proposed cabinets, starting absolute cabinet and absolute starting shelf number from the appropriate class/suborder tabs. Ask Vicky for help with this or to create the tab yourself
